Skinny lattes. That’s probably the first beverage that comes to mind when you think of low-calorie drinks. But wouldn’t it be great if you could find those same lo-cal properties in a cocktail?

You can with Olmeca’s Skinny Margarita recipe!

Let’s first talk a bit about traditional margaritas though. They are one of the most popular cocktails in the world. And so it should be. After all, Margarita in Spanish translates to Daisy, and to horticulturists in the know, the daisy is known as the Friendliest Flower, thanks to its happy appearance, and the whimsy it brings to gardens everywhere. Just like margaritas! But we digress.

The Daisy, in booze terms, is a cocktail family of drinks that has inspired many of the last century’s cocktails that we enjoy today, like the Cosmo, Sidecar, and, most importantly, the Margarita.

But while a Margarita is undoubtedly a friendly drink, it can deliver a lot of calories. So, we put our healthy hats on, and decided to come up with a skinny version.

Our Skinny Margarita is a low-calorie take on a regular recipe. Put aside the orange liqueur like Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand-Marnier, and instead plump for fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice, and a dash of agave nectar.

It’s the best, and healthiest, Margarita you’ll ever have!

Ingredients for the Skinny Margarita Recipe

Just because it’s a skinny drink doesn’t mean you can scrimp on the ingredients. So, get shopping, or gathering if you live on a citrus farm!

  • Freshly squeezed lime juice from 1 ½ small limes
  • Freshly squeezed orange juice from ½ an orange
  • 1 lime wedge for garnish
  • A teaspoon of light agave nectar
  • Sea salt, coarsely ground
  • And, of course, ¼ cup of Olmeca Tequila Silver

How to Make a Skinny Margarita Cocktail

Making a Skinny Margarita is really easy. You can burn even more calories if you prepare the drink while dancing!

  1. Pour salt onto a plate (ideally one slightly larger than the rim of your cocktail glass).
  2. Slice a piece of lime and, with the wet edge, run it along the rim.
  3. Dip the top of the glass into the salt so it’s evenly coated.
  4. Add ice cubes to the glass and place it to one side.
  5. Now, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in the tequila, the freshly squeezed lime and orange juices, and the agave nectar.
  6. Pop on the lid and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain the liquid into your glass and top it off with a slice of lime as garnish.
  7. Sip your margarita with a clear conscience that you aren’t overdoing the calories.

Tips for Drinking a Skinny Margarita

There’s always a way which can make you enjoy your cocktail to its fullest. So, as we want you to do so, we bring you the deepest secrets to drink your Skinny Margarita properly:

  • Needless to say, you want a quality tequila. Choose a high-quality one, that way you can enjoy its taste better and avoid a hangover the day after.
  • Try lining the rim of only half your glass with salt. That way you can control how much salt you taste with each sip.
  • The easiest way to juice limes and oranges is with a hand-held juicer. Oh, and make sure the fruit is at room temperature as that makes it easier to juice than cold citrus.
  • To make a pitcher of margaritas, adjust the quantities accordingly. 10 cocktails? 10 times the ingredients.
  • Play with the quantity of tequila and citrus juices to suit your taste. If the amount of tequila is too strong, use less. Or dilute it with a splash of soda. If you want more, up the dose. If you prefer tart margaritas, use half of the agave nectar. If you prefer them sweeter, use more.
  • And watch out! These margaritas, like standard margaritas, are strong. And they’re very moreish. So, pace yourself.

How Many Calories Are in a Skinny Margarita?

Much as it pains us to say, your normal margarita, whilst irresistible, carries a lot of calories. Think 500 calories per cocktail. But now there’s good news! Skinny margaritas have less than 200 calories per large glass. And they’re just as delicious!

What to Serve with a Skinny Margarita?

One of the best things about margaritas is how well they pair with Mexican meals and appetizers. But be careful. You don’t want to be saving calories with a skinny margarita, only to replace them with a huge plate of quesadillas. Size your portions correctly though, and you can enjoy the same combinations of tastes.

Here are a few ideas for the perfect partners to your cocktail.

  • A small side of tacos. You can make ground beef tacos, lentil tacos, or crockpot chicken tacos. Have a browse online and find the recipe to suit you. Just go easy on portion sizes.
  • Stick with appetisers. There are some wonderful ones to try, including Mexican quinoa salad, mango guacamole, and black bean hummus.
